Application on the face

Vaseline is only conditionally suitable for facial application. Although it is suitable for the care of dry and chapped skin and can make it soft and supple again, it causes a pronounced greasy shine on the skin. This can be very annoying and unpleasant, especially on the face, so it is not recommended to rub Vaseline all over the face.

In addition, Vaseline is not suitable for use on blemished skin or skin that needs moisture. Vaseline closes the skin to the air, i.e. seals it. It does not moisturize the skin, but prevents further evaporation of moisture from the skin.

This occlusion effect can promote skin impurities or even skin diseases. Therefore, moisturizers or lotions should rather be used for facial skin care. Individual brittle areas can certainly be rubbed with Vaseline to make them more supple again. In such a case, it is recommended to apply Vaseline overnight and to remove excess in the morning to remove the strong greasy shine from the face.

Sprays with Vaseline

In the meantime, drugstores now also sell skin care sprays containing Vaseline. Most products of this type are only sold in the USA and contain moisturizing ingredients and smaller amounts of Vaseline, which are supposed to protect the skin from drying out. Vaseline spray is otherwise commonly used in industry, where it is primarily used as a lubricant to prevent or reduce friction. It reduces adhesion and jamming of objects, is water-repellent and can be sprayed onto a wide variety of objects to prevent wear and tear.

Alternatives to Vaseline

Nowadays, many people prefer to do without paraffin-containing cosmetics, which is why more and more alternative offers are appearing on the market. As alternative to the conventional Vaseline different vegetable preparations, which do not contain kerosene, are suitable. One example is organic milking fat, which, unlike classic milking fat, contains beeswax and shea butter instead of Vaseline. Shea butter is a care product derived from the fruits of the shea tree (shea nuts).

For this purpose, the kernels from the shea nuts are grated, heated and processed into a fatty mass. After the butter has been purified, an almost colorless, sometimes slightly yellowish-greenish mass is produced, which is used in many cosmetic products. In the meantime, some suppliers have also developed paraffin-free petroleum jelly, which gets by with natural ingredients and therefore no longer contains petroleum. In drugstores and health food stores, many care products are offered on the basis of vegetable fat, which are suitable for lip and skin care and are in no way inferior to Vaseline.
