If a non-oral disease is identified as the cause of halitosis, the first step is to treat it causally and then wait to see how it progresses.
General measures
- Observance of the general oral hygiene measures!
- Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
- Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
- Limited coffee consumption (max. 3 cups per day).
- Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
Conventional non-surgical therapy methods
- Patients suffering from periodontal diseases such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or periodontitis (disease of the periodontium) can achieve with the help of periodontal therapy that the number of bacteria living in the mouth is reduced, which thus indirectly leads to a reduction in bad breath.

- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
- Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
- Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
- High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Avoid foods such as garlic and onions
- Other specific dietary recommendations depending on the cause of bad breath.
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis.
