Bibrocathol is commercially available as an eye ointment (Posiformin 2%). It was newly approved in many countries in 2012. It was previously available under the name Noviform. Eye medicines containing Bibrocathol were used as early as 1912.
Structure and properties
Bibrocathol (C6H2BiBr4O3, Mr = 650.7 g/mol) is 4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-1,3,2-benzodioxabismol-2-ol. The substance is practically insoluble in water.
Effects
Bibrocathol (ATC S01AX05) is believed to have disinfectant, astringent, and antisecretory properties.
Indications
- Nonspecific, non-excitatory irritation of the external eye.
- Chronic inflammation of the eyelid margin (blepharitis chronica).
Dosage
According to the professional information. The ointment is usually administered 3 to 5 times daily into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye. See also under Administering ophthalmic ointments.

Interactions
No drug-drug interaction studies are available. If other ophthalmic agents are used, an interval of at least 15 minutes should be maintained.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions to the active ingredient or excipients. The ointment contains lanolin, which is a known allergen.
