Body Plethysmography: Reasons, Procedure, Significance

What is the procedure for body plethysmography?

An important advantage of whole-body plethysmopraphy over spirometry – another important variant of pulmonary function testing – is that it provides reliable results even in those patients who are less able to cooperate (such as children). This is because the measurement results do not depend on the air flow in the measurement apparatus.

Determination of the diffusion capacity

In addition, the physician can often determine the so-called diffusion capacity of the lungs using the equipment of a body plethysmography. This is the ability of the lungs to absorb or release oxygen.

The measurement is usually performed using the so-called single-breath method: the patient inhales the test air as deeply as possible. He then holds his breath for a few seconds before exhaling.

Helium can also be added to the test air with carbon monoxide. Then the physician can also determine the residual volume.

Bodyplethysmography: Evaluation

Depending on the diagnosis, the physician will also discuss treatment options and the significance of the condition to the patient after the bodyplethysmography.
