Therapy of tachycardia during pregnancy

Tachycardia in pregnancy is not uncommon, but should be clarified by a doctor if it occurs regularly. The physiological increase of the pulse rate does not require any drug treatment in most cases. However, if it does occur, so-called beta-blockers are usually prescribed in small doses.

According to current data, taking the heart rate-lowering drugs does not lead to damage to the unborn child. The drug metoprolol offers the greatest safety in this respect. While the prescription of a beta-blocker only benefits the mother, possible side effects are based on reduced blood flow to the vessels supplying the child.

Thus, a lower birth weight was observed when taking certain beta-blockers. If the cause is hyperthyroidism, so-called thyroid blockers are used. They inhibit the overproduction of thyroid hormones and thus counteract the accelerated heartbeat. Thiamazole and carbimazole can be given without any problems during pregnancy. The dosage should be kept as low as possible and should be administered under regular control of the corresponding laboratory parameters.

Therapy of tachycardia in the menopause

During the menopause, the function of the cardiovascular system can also become out of rhythm. In addition to an increase in blood pressure, altered heart actions such as heart stumbling, but also palpitations, especially at night, are observed. If the symptoms accumulate, a medical examination should be performed.

In individual consultation with the doctor, a progesterone preparation can be prescribed. Its primary purpose is to relieve vegetative symptoms such as palpitations, sweating and hot flushes. In addition to a herbal progesterone, there are also synthetic progestins.

It is decided in each individual case which preparation is suitable for treating the symptoms. Since taking synthetic progestins carries an increased risk of breast cancer, the decision must be carefully weighed up. If necessary, a combination therapy with oestrogens will be administered. Regular endurance training and physical activity also contribute significantly to the alleviation of symptoms.
