Bone Marrow Inflammation (Osteomyelitis): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by osteomyelitis (bone marrow inflammation):

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Frequent recurrence (recurrence) of osteomyelitis.
  • Bone destruction (bone destruction).
  • Pathological fracture (bone fracture)
  • Subacute or chronic multifocal (“occurring in multiple locations of the body simultaneously”) osteomyelitis with multiple Brodie abscesses (BA; encapsulation of a septic focus), most commonly involving the lower limbs

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).

Further

  • Implant loosening
  • Implant failure

Prognostic factors

  • Increased mortality rate (death rate) for diabetics (additional risk on death certificate: type 1 diabetics 58 times (women) or 16 times (men) increased mortality risk as in the general population, type 2 diabetics about three times as often).
