The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by osteomyelitis (bone marrow inflammation):

- Sepsis (blood poisoning)
Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).
- Frequent recurrence (recurrence) of osteomyelitis.
- Bone destruction (bone destruction).
- Pathological fracture (bone fracture)
- Subacute or chronic multifocal (“occurring in multiple locations of the body simultaneously”) osteomyelitis with multiple Brodie abscesses (BA; encapsulation of a septic focus), most commonly involving the lower limbs
Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).

Further
- Implant loosening
- Implant failure
Prognostic factors
- Increased mortality rate (death rate) for diabetics (additional risk on death certificate: type 1 diabetics 58 times (women) or 16 times (men) increased mortality risk as in the general population, type 2 diabetics about three times as often).
