Bronchiectasis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of bronchiectasis.

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent lung disease in your family?
  • Are there any respiratory diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Did you suffer from frequent respiratory infections in childhood?
  • Do you currently suffer from respiratory illnesses?
  • Do you have a cough with or without sputum and/or shortness of breath? Are these symptoms getting worse?*
  • What does the sputum look like?
  • Have you noticed a whistling breathing sound?
  • Have you noticed blood in your cough* ?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • Are you often tired?
  • Do you have chest pain?
  • Have your fingers and fingernails changed in appearance?
  • Do you notice whistling sounds when you exhale?
  • How long have these symptoms been present?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally?
  • Do you smoke or have you ever smoked? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?

Self history including medication history.
