Structure and properties
Buformin (C6H15N5, Mr = 157.2 g/mol) is a 1-butylbiguanide with a similar structure to metformin from the same drug group. It is present in drugs as buformin hydrochloride.
Effects
Buformin (ATC A10BA03) has antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic properties. It decreases insulin resistance and increases glucose uptake into tissues.
Indications
For the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Adverse effects
Buformin can cause dangerous lactic acidosis comparatively frequently.
