Structure and properties
Bufotenin (C12H16N2O, Mr = 204.3 g/mol) is an ,-dimethylated serotonin related to psilocin. It is hydroxylated DMT (,-dimethyl-5-hydroxytryptamine). Bufotenin is a component of toad venom secreted by , for example, the Aga toad, and is also found in plants (e.g. ).
Effects
Bufotenin has hallucinogenic properties. The effects are due to interaction with serotonin receptors.
Indications
No established medical uses exist.
Abuse
Bufotenin is used as a hallucinogen.
