Care level 5 – you should know that

Definition

Care level 5 is the highest level of the 5 care levels. This expresses the greatest severity of need for care in which a patient can be classified. It represents the highest claim to care services, which are paid out by the care insurance companies to the individual insured person in case of a need for care. It occurs when there are severe impairments of independence and/or abilities with special requirements for care.

Prerequisite for care level 5

The first condition in order to be able to be classified at all into a care degree, is the minimum insurance period of the care insurance, which specifies, starting from when care money can be requested and disbursed. Every person in need of care is only entitled to care allowance if he or she has paid into the same statutory care insurance for two years in the ten years prior to the application. After that, an application can be made to determine the degree of care.

A point system determines the point at which the respective degree of care is reached. The system consists of 100 points. From 90 points onwards, the prerequisite for the degree of nursing care level 5 is fulfilled.

These prerequisites include impairments from a total of 6 modules, which represent different areas of life. These are limitations in mobility, cognitive and communicative abilities, behavior and psyche, self-care, coping and independent handling of requirements caused by illness and therapy, the organization of everyday life and social contacts. If there is a particularly severe need that makes independent coping with the tasks and abilities hardly or no longer possible and/or the complete loss of function of legs and/or arms is present, a care level 5 can be awarded even if the score falls below 90 points. Since the 90 points are made up of the sum of restrictions from the different modules and different degrees of severity, the exact requirement is decided individually in each case.
