How long are ringwordles contagious?

Infection with rubella is so common that 70% of adults in Germany have had an infection. The incubation period begins with the time of infection, which is about 4-14 days and ends as soon as the disease breaks out. At the time of the appearance of the rash, also called “erythema infectiosum”, the disease is clearly visible and diagnosable. However, one is then no longer contagious. Ringed rubella is therefore only contagious until the reddening of the skin begins.

The diagnosis

The diagnosis is made by means of the rash, among other things. But above all the blood count gives indications. Antibodies and viral DNA can be detected using special techniques (PCR).

More general information about blood testing can be found here. In case of mild symptoms, no blood test is necessary. If there are also chronic blood diseases, it is advisable to have a blood test because the virus settles in the precursor cells of the red blood cells.

In some cases this can lead to a slight anaemia, i.e. a lack of blood. Clinically, this can be shown by paleness and fatigue. In anemia, the haemoglobin value (measured value of the blood pigment) and the red blood cells are reduced. The preliminary stages of the red blood cells, i.e. the reticulocytes, can also be lowered in rubella anemia.

The Therapy

As for all viral infections, there is still no suitable drug available. However, treatment is not necessary either. Medicines against itching can be prescribed if necessary.

The disease Ringel rubella can neither be treated by conventional medicine nor homeopathically. However, some remedies can be used to alleviate the symptoms. In case of fever and a worsened general condition, bed rest should be observed and sufficient drinking water should be consumed.

For itching, one can, for example, wash with bran or whey. You can also soak sachets of oat flakes in water and then repeatedly squeeze them out on the itchy skin areas and let them dry. This can be done in the bathtub without much effort.
