Psyllium: Dosage

Psyllium seeds can be purchased loose or packaged in bags. Preparations containing psyllium seeds are sold mainly in the USA, in Central Europe people prefer Indian psyllium seeds.

Average daily dose

The average daily dose is 10-30 g of the psyllium seeds, unless otherwise prescribed.

Psyllium: Preparation as a laxative

The preparation of a tea is not necessary, because psyllium seeds are not ingested in the form of tea.

To prepare a laxative, 10 g of the seeds (1 teaspoon equals about 4.7 g) can be allowed to swell with about 100 ml of water. The mixture can then be taken in the evening and morning; at least 200 ml of liquid should then be drunk in each case.

When should psyllium not be used?

Psyllium should not be taken in the presence of intestinal obstruction and other pathological narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract and esophagus. Children under 12 years of age should also not take psyllium due to insufficient empirical data.

What should be considered when taking psyllium?

  • When taking psyllium, care should be taken to ensure adequate hydration.
  • The seeds should not be taken together with milk, as this does not lead to swelling.
  • Psyllium seeds should also not be taken lying down, as this could cause premature swelling and blockage of the airways.
  • Please also note that the effect of psyllium often occurs only after a week of continuous intake.
  • The drug should be stored dry, cool and protected from light.
  • Crushed psyllium should be stored for no more than 24 hours, otherwise the fats contained may become rancid.
