Causes
There are many different causes that can lead to pain after bowel movements. Initially, the focus is on harmless things like constipation and flatulence, as well as irritation of the anus. If the complaints persist for a longer period of time, very strong pain or other symptoms occur, a comprehensive examination and clarification of the cause should take place.
In general, almost any disease that occurs in the area of the gastrointestinal tract can be responsible for the complaints. Many women suffer from pain during and after pregnancy, which occurs after defecation. In most cases this can be explained by a change in digestion during pregnancy.
Pregnant women often suffer from constipation or flatulence. Hemorrhoids and anal venous thrombosis are also common in pregnant women and can be responsible for the pain. Since these diseases are not dangerous, but a therapy is successful in many cases, it is recommended that pregnant women also visit their doctor for clarification.
After the pregnancy, pain is often caused by injuries and irritations that occurred during birth. A common reason that can lead to pain after bowel movements is the so-called hemorrhoidal disease. In this case the vessels, which are located in a ring around the rectum, are pathologically enlarged.
The enlarged vessels can cause problems during bowel movement. Besides pain, bleeding and stool smears are frequent symptoms of the disease. A hemorrhoidal disease is not dangerous, but can be treated well, so a visit to a doctor is recommended.
Therapy
The therapy of the pain that occurs after defecation depends in principle on the disease that is responsible for the symptoms. Especially if the pain is not very severe and can be associated with digestive problems, a wait-and-see attitude and, if necessary, a change of diet should be carried out. Serious illnesses may require drug therapy or surgery. Which therapy is appropriate in each individual case can best be discussed with the attending physician after final diagnosis.
