Contraindications

Glucobay® also has certain contraindications for which the drug must not be taken. These include:

  • A hypersensitivity reaction with previous use of Glucobay®
  • Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (here the risk of a disturbance of absorption in the bowel may be too high)
  • All types of diabetic metabolic derailment with coma ketoacidosis and hypoglycaemia
  • Coma
  • Ketoacidosis
  • And hypoglycaemia
  • Colon Ulcers
  • Suspicion of intestinal obstruction
  • Severe liver dysfunction such as cirrhosis of the liver Severe kidney disease
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Coma
  • Ketoacidosis
  • And hypoglycaemia
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Severe kidney disease

Cautious use

It is recommended to check the liver values during the first 6 to 12 months, as they often rise at the beginning. In addition, creatinine levels should be monitored (to rule out kidney dysfunction). Although Glucobay® lowers blood sugar levels, the risk of hypoglycemia (a dangerous hypoglycemic condition) is very low when taken alone.

If other antidiabetics are also taken, the risk of hypoglycemia increases. If the hypoglycemic area is reached, the dose of Glucobay® must be reduced. Pregnancy and lactation: No foetus-damaging properties have been shown in animal experiments.

However, no studies in pregnant women have been performed and therefore Glucobay® is prohibited in pregnancy. Breastfeeding mothers are not advised to take acarbose. No transfer of the drug into breast milk could be shown, but also could not be excluded.

Side effects

As with other antidiabetics, Glucobay® may also cause adverse effects.   • Flatulence (bloating)
  • Diarrhea
  • As well as stomach ache
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • And digestive problems are shown.
  • Jaundice
  • And edema (especially noticeable on the ankles).
  • Thrombocytopenia (too few platelets in the body)
  • Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)
  • Ileus or pseudoileus (ileus means intestinal obstruction).
