Cystic Fibrosis: Surgical Therapy

1st order

  • In the case of large pneumothorax* , the installation of a chest drain is required
  • Bronchial artery embolization (= artificial occlusion of a pulmonary artery by a vascular plug) is used in cases of hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
  • In severe respiratory insufficiency (respiratory weakness), the only curative measure is lung transplantation (LUTX)

* Pneumothorax is a usually acute, life-threatening condition, depending on its severity, in which air enters the pleural space, obstructing the expansion of one or both lungs.
