Dexibuprofen

Products

Dexibuprofen is commercially available as film-coated tablets and as a powder for oral suspension (Seractil). It was approved in many countries in 1997.

Structure and properties

Dexibuprofen (C13H18O2, Mr = 206.3 g/mol) is the -enantiomer of ibuprofen. It exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. Ibuprofen is a racemate of equal parts (+)- and (-)-enantiomer. The (+)-enantiomer dexibuprofen is mainly pharmacologically active and is therefore marketed separately.

Effects

Dexibuprofen (ATC M01AE14) has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase and thus inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Indications

For the treatment of pain and inflammatory conditions of various causes, for example, arthritis, osteoarthritis, muscle and joint pain, gout, after surgery and menstrual cramps, and for the treatment of fever.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Medicines are usually taken three to four times a day. The maximum single dose for adults is 400 mg, and the maximum daily dose is 1200 mg (lower than for ibuprofen). If a rapid onset of action is desired, the drug may be taken fasting. In case of digestive problems, it is recommended to take it with meals.
