Diagnosis of the swollen jaw

The diagnosis of a swollen cheek is mainly made by optical observation. The side comparison actually shows very well whether there is an inequality of both halves of the face and the extent of the swelling. It is also important to look into the oral cavity if any swelling is visible from the outside. The mucous membrane as well as inflammatory tooth changes must be taken into consideration as a cause. If an open wound is visible, the possible contamination with pathogens should be clarified either by a visual diagnosis or with a smear test. If the cheek is swollen over a large area, a physician must rule out the spread to the eye socket due to the anatomical proximity

How long does a swelling of the cheek last?

With the right treatment, swelling of the cheek usually subsides within a few days. If a mucosal defect is present without complications, the swelling of the cheek will subside within the regeneration time of the mucosa of about 3 days. If, on the other hand, teeth are the cause of the pain, the cheek will only subside after the tooth has been treated.

Once an abscess is opened, the swelling will subside as the wound heals. In general, swelling should not last longer than one week without treatment and any worsening of symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor.
