Diagnosis
In order to make the correct diagnosis, the examining doctor will first take a detailed medical history and perform a physical examination. The description of the symptoms as well as a possible change in pain during the examination often provide enough information to make a suspected diagnosis. In addition, imaging procedures such as ultrasound or MRI images of the abdomen can help to diagnose the disease. Stool samples or a colonoscopy are further procedures to determine the cause of the disease.
Right lower abdominal pain by sex
In general, most of the diseases responsible for right lower abdominal pain can occur equally in both men and women. There are, however, some diseases which can be specifically responsible for the symptoms in men. Particularly noteworthy are diseases of the male genital organs.
Urological emergencies such as the so-called testicular torsion can cause severe lower abdominal pain. In this case, due to genetic predisposition or an accident, a testicle rotates on its own axis and thus prevents its own blood flow.Infections caused by sexually transmitted diseases should also be considered as a cause. Since men suffer from hernia much more often, this should be excluded as a possible cause during the examination.
Likewise, a chronic inflammation of the prostate, an enlarged prostate or prostate tumors can lead to lower abdominal pain in men. In women suffering from lower abdominal pain, diseases of the female reproductive organs should be considered as possible causes in addition to the other known causes which may be responsible for the pain. Probably the most common reason why women suffer from lower abdominal pain is menstrual pain.
But cysts on the ovaries or diseases such as endometriosis are also typical reasons for the occurrence of right-sided lower abdominal pain in women. Through jumping movements (jumping, dancing, etc. ), especially if ovarian cysts are known, a stem-turned ovarian cyst can occur, which can manifest itself in considerable lower abdominal pain.
Likewise, if there is a possibility of being pregnant, a pregnancy test should be performed. Especially if an ectopic pregnancy occurs, this can manifest itself in right lower abdominal complaints. Finally, bladder infections, which occur relatively frequently in women, can lead to pain in the lower abdomen.
