Diarrhea due to medication | Causes of diarrhoea

Diarrhea due to medication

Diarrhea can also be caused by medication. An important role is played here by antibiotics, which either cause diarrhoea by influencing the normal bacterial intestinal flora or by infection with certain germs, called clostridia. Diarrhea as a result of increased sensitivity to the antibiotic is also being discussed.

(Here you can find more information about abdominal pain caused by antibiotics) Other drugs that trigger diarrhoea are laxatives, cytostatics (used, among other things, in cancer), colchicine (formerly used to treat gout) and many others. Other important causes of diarrhoea are food poisoning (food intoxication). These are caused by substances (toxins) that are toxic to humans, which are produced by certain bacteria and absorbed with food. Such toxin formers are for example a certain type of staphylococcus (Staphylococcus aureus).

Diarrhoea can have a variety of causes:

  • Bacteria (Escherichia coli)
  • Viruses (noroviruses or rotaviruses) or protozoa (protozoa)
  • Salmonella or shigella
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Stress
  • Increased intake of antibiotics
