Duration of bruising

Depending on the cause and size of the bruise on the eye, it takes different lengths of time for a hematoma to heal. Smaller haematomas break down faster than larger ones. The time required for bruising inside and outside the eye is generally about the same.

Bruises can take up to two to three weeks before they are no longer visible. In this case, one of the decisive factors is whether the bleeding has stopped or whether there is recurrent oozing bleeding around the eye. A constant trickle of blood would lead to an extension of the healing time.

Bruise on baby’s eye

Bruises on a baby’s eye are to be taken seriously in any case. The cause can be a trauma in the sense of an accident or an act of violence. The procedure for treatment is the same as for adults.

First of all, it must be assessed whether and which structures in the area of the baby’s eye are injured. Corresponding wait-and-see or operative behaviour should therefore be aimed for. Vision tests are difficult to perform on babies, which means that it is particularly important to use ultrasound and imaging to rule out possible injuries to the eye.

The extent to which treatment must be carried out also depends on the extent, the visual impairment of the baby and the displacement of other structures of the eye. If no other reason for the occurrence of the haematoma is apparent, a criminal investigation should be initiated to determine the cause of the injuries.
