During pregnancy

Unfortunately, pain in the pelvis and lower spine is not uncommon during pregnancy. During pregnancy the female body releases the hormone “Relaxin”. This hormone is intended to loosen muscles and ligaments so that the birth can take place more easily.

In addition, however, it can lead to muscle problems in other parts of the body. The ISG blockade is not uncommon during pregnancy. It loosens the ligament structures between the hip bones and the lower spine, which results in a loss of stability.

During pregnancy, this should be treated with light exercises and muscle building. If possible, medication should be avoided. The pain during pregnancy increases even more towards the end of the pregnancy because the additional weight and pressure in the pelvis exerts forces on the spine.

Pain in the sacrum after pregnancy

The hormonal changes and physical stress that affect the female body during pregnancy should not be underestimated. In particular, the combination of relaxing hormones with a steadily increasing weight load exerts strong forces on the sacrum, the pelvis and the spine. The birth is a very sudden change, after which the changed structures have to readjust. This is why back pain often reoccurs after the birth. Here too, specific exercises that build up strength can help.

Ischialgia/Lumboischialgia

Sciatica is the name given to pain syndromes that are caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve or the associated nerve root. Often the cause is a lumbar disc prolapse, which compresses the nerve root. Typical symptoms are severe pain in the gluteal region, which can radiate into the leg depending on the extent of the disc prolapse.

The pain extends from the back of the thigh and lower leg to the foot. A spinal canal that is too narrow can also press on the nerve roots (spinal canal stenosis). The symptoms can easily be confused with those of a slipped disc. In lumbago, the pain is concentrated in the lower back. The combination of both is called lumboischialgia.
