How do you recognize worn enamel?

Enamel decay can be diagnosed on the basis of several parameters. It is possible to detect certain signs on the tooth. First of all, as the enamel wears away, the tooth becomes thinner or less high than before.

As the enamel becomes thinner, the tooth may appear dull and “transparent” in the area of the incisal edges of the front teeth. However, the tooth looks darker overall because the yellow dentin becomes visible. The tooth reacts to the enamel decay with increasing sensitivity to pain, which usually manifests itself when eating cold or very hot food.The reason for this is the lost protection by the enamel.

Accompanying symptoms of enamel degradation

Dwindling enamel has enormous consequences for dental health. As soon as the enamel begins to decompose and its protective layer for the dentine disappears with it, sensitivity increases. This is particularly noticeable in contact with cold, hot, acidic or spicy foods.

The stimuli pass directly through the dentine tubules to the tooth pulp where they strike the nerve. In addition, the tooth becomes more fragile because the dentin is much softer than the hard enamel. This can cause the edges of fillings to rise up or parts of the tooth that are exposed to a lot of stress during chewing to break off.

This can lead to changes in color. Often even the yellow dentin (dentin) can shimmer through. Furthermore, the risk of cavities caused by caries increases enormously.

In most cases, the consumption of many acidic foods is the main reason for the decay of the tooth enamel. It is therefore very important to avoid these foods as far as possible. Unfortunately, the consumption of large quantities of fruit or raw vegetables is harmful to the teeth.

Although these foods are very healthy, they contain a lot of acids that are harmful to the enamel. The effect is aggravated if you brush your teeth immediately after eating raw foods, because then the softened enamel is brushed away directly. There are no foods that can directly promote enamel build-up.

It is more important to avoid harmful foods. In the following you should avoid sugary drinks, especially soft drinks and juices. Wine also contains a lot of acid, which can damage our teeth.

Of course you should not have to do without fruit or raw vegetables. It is therefore recommended to drink water when and especially after eating acidic food. In this way a part of the acid can already be washed away and neutralized. In addition, you should wait at least an hour after eating before brushing your teeth to prevent the already weakened tooth enamel from rubbing off.
