Fit on the Plane: How to Travel Comfortably

Summer, sun, beach and sea – who can, now likes to travel to the south to escape our fickle weather. However, in order to be able to take an exotic beach vacation, a long-haul flight of several hours often has to be accepted. To help you arrive at your vacation destination fit and rested, here are some healthy tips:

  • Sore throat or hoarseness are common symptoms after long air travel. The reason is due to the air conditioning of the plane. The low humidity dries out the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat; this makes it easier for viruses and bacteria to attach to the mucous membranes. The result: you get sick more quickly. Therefore, it is important to drink about 0.5 – 1 liter more water or diluted fruit juices than usual during a long flight, so that the mucous membranes always remain moist.
  • Take a spray with physiological saline solution from the pharmacy and spray the solution every 30 minutes in the nose; this reduces the unpleasant drying of the nasal mucosa. You should do this even a few days after the flight at your vacation destination.
  • Avoid flatulent foods before the flight and do not drink carbonated mineral water. This can lead to flatulence at airy heights.
  • During sleep, the organism is least stressed during a long-haul flight.
  • Occurring sleep problems and agitation can be alleviated by a mild valerian preparation.
  • Alcoholic beverages and coffee should better not be drunk on the plane, as they are water-sodden.
  • Even healthy people have calf cramps, vein problems and circulatory problems in the legs after a long-haul flight.
  • Your circulation will thank you if you move around. Get up again and again and walk around. So you improve the return flow of venous blood.
  • Loosen clothes and belts during the flight. Take off your shoes on the plane and store your legs high, preferably on a travel bag. Massage the feet and do gymnastic exercises with the toes.
  • Also remember a warming garment, because sometimes it is cool on the plane.
  • After a long flight, many feel like they are tired because of the time difference. When you land, the body is often programmed for night rest. At their destination, however, is a bright day. You are tired, irritable, unfocused, listless. Against the physical consequences of the time zone shift, the so-called jet lag, you can best help yourself by adjusting your sleep / wake rhythm to the time at your vacation destination in advance.
  • Do you suffer from a chronic disease talk to your doctor, whether and under what conditions a long-haul flight for you comes into question.
