Focal Segmental Sclerosing Glomerulonephritis: Drug Therapy

Therapeutic target

Avert deterioration of renal function

Therapy recommendations

  • Early initiation of immunosuppressive therapy:
    • Glucocorticoids should be started first, as response to these can estimate prognosis
    • Ciclosporin (cyclosporin A) is used in contraindications (contraindications) to glucocorticoids or steroid resistance.
  • The immunosuppressant abatacept (rheumatoid drug) can stop proteinuria (increased excretion of protein in the urine) in patients with focal segmental glomerulonephritis (synonyms: focal and segmental hyalinosis and sclerosis, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, FSGS) if the disease is associated with increased expression of the immune molecule B7-1 on podocytes (cells of the renal corpuscles) in the renal filters.
