Forecast | Course of a slipped disc

Forecast

The prognosis of a herniated disc is in most cases quite favorable, often the pain improves noticeably after a few weeks of efficient treatment. Severe forms of progression are generally rare. Nevertheless, the treatment is lengthy.

On average, conservative therapy takes between 3 and 6 months. In the case of both conservative and surgical treatment, follow-up treatment in the form of physiotherapy, training of the trunk muscles and back training is recommended to prevent new disc herniations. The reoccurrence of a disc prolapse (both on the same and on another disc) cannot be completely ruled out despite ideal therapy conditions. A slipped disc should therefore be understood as a warning and taken as an opportunity to continue to perform back exercises on your own initiative and to pay attention to your own posture.
