Internet Addiction: Therapy

In severe cases of Internet addiction, inpatient or day treatment is required.

Comorbidities (concomitant diseases) must be treated as well. Drug therapy is indicated only in the case of comorbidities, as far as this is in accordance with guidelines.

In the context of therapy, it must be clear that complete abstinence from the Internet is neither achievable nor to be strived for.

General measures

  • Generate interest in other recreational activities and sports.
  • For children, involve parents in all recommendations
  • For married couples, marriage counseling may be indicated.
  • Participation in self-help groups

Sports Medicine

  • Physical activity counts as part of the treatment plan
  • Endurance training (cardio training)
  • Preparation of a fitness or training plan with suitable sports disciplines based on a medical check (health check or athlete check).

Psychotherapy

  • The most important pillar of therapy for Internet addiction is psychotherapy. The following procedures are available:
    • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
    • Psychodynamic therapy
    • Social skills training
