Fructose is found mainly in fruits and vegetables, but also in other foods and compounds.
The goal of therapy for hereditary fructose intolerance is the complete exclusion of foods containing fructose. The following compounds are prohibited in the context of hereditary fructose intolerance (we have a more detailed list of foods that should be consistently avoided):
Invert sugar is a mixture of glucose and fructose and is formed during sucrose digestion
The goal of therapy for intestinal fructose intolerance (fructose indigestion) is to reduce the amount of fructose ingested with food. The following recommendations apply to intestinal fructose intolerance:
Furthermore, people with fructose intolerance must not ingest sorbitol also because it is converted to fructose in the metabolism.
The intake of sucrose does not have to be reduced, because the simultaneously supplied glucose compensates for the intake deficit of fructose. Thus, even fructose-rich fruits and vegetables can be made compatible again by the simultaneous consumption of glucose.
Be careful when eating legumes or cabbage vegetables. They contain the carbohydrates stachyose and verbascose, which can not be absorbed in the intestine and increase the discomfort.
