Gestodene

Products

Gestodene is marketed in many countries exclusively in combination with ethinyl estradiol in the form of dragées and film-coated tablets as an oral contraceptive (“pill”). It has been approved in many countries since 1986.

Structure and properties

Gestodene (C21H26O2, Mr = 310.4 g/mol) exists as a white to yellowish crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Gestodene (ATC G03AB06) has contraceptive properties. The effects are primarily due to inhibition of ovulation. The half-life is 16 to 18 hours.

Indications

In combination with an estrogen for oral hormonal contraception.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The tablets are taken once daily at the same time of day for 21 days. This is followed by a break from taking the tablets for 7 days. Subsequently, the next intake cycle is started.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include headache and breakthrough bleeding. This when combined with ethinyl estradiol.
