Gum Inflammation (Gingivitis): Therapy

It is quite easy to prevent plaque-induced gingivitis. Regular removal of plaque will deprive the bacteria of the basis of life and the irritation of the gums will remain absent.

General measures

  • Mechanical plaque control:
    • Toothbrushes
    • Dental floss
    • Interdental brushes
    • Professional dental cleaning (PZR)
  • Recommendations for the pregnant woman: to avoid pregnancy gingivitis as much as possible, the teeth should be professionally cleaned at the beginning of pregnancy, so that the bacteria are deprived of the breeding ground. Especially during pregnancy, food residues should be removed as regularly as possible. Pregnancy counseling at the dentist teaches the correct brushing techniques and provides information about a tooth-healthy diet.Attention! If gingivitis remains untreated, it inevitably develops into periodontitis – the most common cause of tooth loss!
  • Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Stress

Regular checkups

  • Regular dental checkups

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • Diet rich in:
      • Minerals (magnesium)
      • Nitrate-rich vegetable juice showed a positive effect in chronic gingivitis after only two weeks of intake.Mechanism of action:This stimulates nitrate-nitrite-NO metabolism. NO is known to lower blood pressure and promote blood circulation and can trigger anti-inflammatory processes. Since the vegetable juice contains sufficient vitamin C, no nitrosamine is also produced.
      • Omega-3 fatty acids (once or twice a week fresh sea fish, ie fatty marine fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel).
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
