Hepatology

Hepatology is a specialty of gastroenterology. It deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver and bile ducts with the gallbladder and pancreas.

Diseases treated by hepatologists include, for example:

  • Infections of the liver (mainly viral infections such as hepatitis, but also bacterial infections and infestations with parasites such as liver fluke and amoebae)
  • Liver abscesses
  • alcohol-toxic or drug-induced liver diseases
  • jaundice
  • fatty liver
  • cirrhosis of the liver
  • liver insufficiency
  • tumors (such as liver cancer, liver metastases, gallbladder cancer)
  • Inflammation of the bile ducts
  • Gallstones
  • Bile flow disorders
  • congenital malformations of the liver
  • acute fatty liver of pregnancy
