How often should the exercises be performed?

Many patients wonder how often they should perform the described exercises. It should be noted that, as a rule, there is a chance of success of almost 100% after the first performance. Only in individual cases is repetition necessary.

If the dizziness persists after the second and third attempts, a neurologist should be consulted, since another cause for the positioning vertigo must also be considered. The old saying “a lot helps a lot” does not necessarily apply in this case either, as so often. It does not depend on how often the exercise was performed, but rather on the fact that it was performed correctly at one point.

A prophylactic execution of the exercises does not make sense in so far as there are no crystals in the auditory canals at the moment of vertigo, which would have to be moved. There is much more the danger that unnecessarily fast movements will cause dizziness in the position. A rescue maneuver should therefore only be performed in acute cases.

If the vertigo has already occurred, no additional damage can be caused by incorrect or incomplete execution of the exercises. The result of an incorrect execution is merely that the dizziness persists and the nausea provoked during the exercise was more or less “for nothing”. Apart from this, however, there is no anatomical damage.

What to do if these exercises do not help?

If the diagnosis of positional vertigo is confirmed by a physician, the rescue maneuvers are currently the only treatment option, although they have a success rate of almost 100%. In very severe cases, surgery may also be necessary, but this is very complicated and risky. There is currently (as of 2016) no drug therapy available.

It is extremely unlikely that the positioning vertigo will not disappear if the above exercises are performed correctly. If this is the case, further diagnostics may be necessary to exclude the possibility of a false diagnosis. In any case, this should be done by a neurologist, including imaging procedures. For the correct execution of the exercises, it is advisable to have a partner at your side for support, at least for the first few exercises on your own.
