Can cradle cap be removed?
More important than the question of how to remove cradle cap is whether it is advisable to remove it at all. Doctors recommend not doing this. This is because cradle cap is usually the first manifestation of atopic dermatitis. It would do no good to remove the scabs, but rather harm:
The baby may feel pain when you loosen the crusts on the inflamed, very itchy areas of skin. This also creates small wounds in which bacteria can quickly settle and possibly further inflame the affected area.
How can cradle cap be treated?
Many parents are worried that cradle cap will affect their child’s well-being and ask themselves: What can be done to treat cradle cap? If you want to treat cradle cap, it is important to alleviate the rash and itching associated with it. The following measures are generally helpful for cradle cap and neurodermatitis:
- Cooling compresses and lotions (e.g. with added polidocanol or menthol) soothe the inflamed skin and relieve itching.
- Cortisone preparations and immunomodulators in the form of creams and ointments dampen the inflammatory reaction that leads to the rash. However, these medications should only ever be used on babies for a short time and under medical supervision.

Removing head gneiss is not a problem. To do this, wash the child’s scalp with a mild baby shampoo. If a stubborn layer of dandruff has formed, soak it for a while with a baby oil under a head covering. The dandruff can then be easily removed with a baby brush.
Consult your pediatrician if you are unsure whether it is cradle cap or another condition.
