Products
Various eye drops and eye gels containing hyaluronic acid are commercially available. These are registered medicinal products (e.g., Lacrycon) and medical devices (e.g., Bepanthen eye drops).
Structure and properties
Hyaluronic acid is usually present in the preparations in the form of the sodium salt sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is a natural glycosaminoglycan composed of disaccharide units of -glucuronic acid and -acetyl–glucosamine. Hyaluronic acid can be biotechnologically produced or extracted from natural materials such as rooster combs.
Effects
Hyaluronic acid (ATC S01XA20) moisturizes and soothes the conjunctiva and cornea. It is hygroscopic, so it binds water and acts as a substitute for the missing tear fluid.
Indications
For symptomatic treatment of dry eyes. For tired, red, itchy and irritated eyes.
Dosage
According to the package insert. Dosage depends on the product. Typically, 1 drop is placed in the eyes three to four times daily. See also under Administering eye drops. Hyaluronic acid eye drops can be used regularly.
Contraindications
Ophthalmic agents are contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label. Products are available that are compatible with contact lenses.
Interactions
Other eye drops should be administered approximately 15 minutes apart.
Adverse effects
The preparations are usually well tolerated. Possible adverse effects include local reactions to the eye, such as a burning sensation after application.
