The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by hypoglycemia (low blood sugar):
Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)
- Cardiac arrhythmias (due to hypoglycemia and diabetes mellitus type 2) – esp. atrial fibrillation (AF).
Persons using health care for other reasons (Z70-Z76).
- Stress
Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)
- Neurological disorders due to nutrient deficiencies in the brain; in the elderly, hypoglycemia also increases the risk of dementia
- Psychosis
Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).
- Fatigue
- Fatigue
Injuries, poisoning, and other sequelae of external causes (S00-T98).
- Injuries due to falls, etc.
Prognostic factors
- Insulin-dependent type 2 diabetic patients who reported mild hypoglycemia did not have an increased risk of mortality (risk of dying); in fact, they had approximately 50% reduced mortality compared with patients without hypoglycemia.
- Type 2 diabetics with severe hypoglycemia during the course of a study had an 80% increased risk of mortality (risk of death), a 60% increased cardiovascular mortality (risk of death due to heart and blood vessels), and about twice the risk of hospitalization for heart failure (heart failure)
