Indinavir

Products

Indinavir is commercially available in capsule form (Crixivan). It has been approved in many countries since 1996.

Structure and properties

Indinavir (C36H47N5O4, Mr = 613.8 g/mol) is present in drugs as indinavir sulfate, a white crystalline powder that is very soluble in water.

Effects

Indinavir (ATC J05AE02) has antiviral properties. The effects are due to inhibition of HIV protease, which plays a central role in viral maturation and replication.

Indications

For the treatment of HIV infection (combination antiretroviral therapy).

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Capsules are taken every 8 hours and usually fasting, i.e., one hour before or two hours after a meal. It is also possible to take with a light meal.

Contraindications

Indinavir contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity and must not be combined with certain drugs. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Indinavir is metabolized by CYP3A4. Appropriate drug-drug interactions are possible with CYP substrates, inhibitors, and inducers.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, crystalluria, kidney stones, rash, dry skin, headache, altered taste perception, weakness, and fatigue.
