Influenza (Flu): Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Respiratory infection, unspecified
  • Pneumonia (pneumonia), interstitial (caused by other pathogens: e.g., chlamydia, legionella, mycoplasma, influenza and parainfluenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenoviruses).

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Influenza – viral infection of the upper respiratory tract; so-called common cold.
  • Influenza-like Illness – generic term for infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused by a wide range of pathogens (mainly viruses, but also bacteria or fungi).
  • MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus); formerly referred to as Human Betacoronavirus 2c EMC/2012 (HCoV-EMC, also Human Coronavirus EMC, was initially referred to as “New Coronavirus” NCoV); from the coronavirus family (Coronaviridae); first identified in 2012; pathogen reservoir: Bats; camels and dromedaries; leads to severe infection of the respiratory tract; course: acute onset of flu-like illness, which in the course of the first week can progress to pneumonia (pneumonia) and later to acute respiratory distress syndrome with renal failure; lethality 40%.
  • SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome; severe acute respiratory syndrome) – in this infection of the respiratory tract with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-1 (SARS-associated coronavirus, SARS-CoV) there is an atypical pneumonia; lethality (mortality rate) 10%.
  • SARS-CoV-2 (synonyms: novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV); 2019-nCoV (2019-novel coronavirus; coronavirus 2019-nCoV); Wuhan coronavirus) – in this respiratory infection with SARS-CoV-2, atypical pneumonia (pneumonia) occurs, which is called COVID-19 (Engl. coronavirus disease 2019, coronavirus disease-2019) has received; lethality (mortality relative to the total number of people suffering from the disease) 2.3%.
