Instructions for use in children
Cough suppressants can be used for children who suffer from severe irritable cough due to a cold or bronchitis and who for this reason cannot sleep well at night. It is important that a irritable cough is present and not a so-called productive cough, i.e. cough with sputum. If a cough suppressant is used for a productive cough, the expectoration of mucus is prevented and it can settle on the bronchi.
If the irritable cough is not too severe, treatment with naturally effective preparations, such as ribwort plantain or sundew, can first be tried in children. Cough syrups containing these preparations are suitable for infants from 6 months of age. If the irritable cough is more pronounced and the natural preparations do not show sufficient effect, Codein or Capval can also be used in children.
However, codeine should only be used in children over 12 years of age due to the reduction of the respiratory drive, whereas Capval may be used in infants over 6 months of age. Due to the relatively high side effects, therapy with cough suppressants in children should not be longer than 2 days.
