Is Sugar Really a Nutrient Robber?

Sugary foods should be enjoyed in moderation, because sugar provides a lot of calories, but no vital vitamins and minerals. Often you hear the claim that sugar, moreover, deprives the body of vitamins and minerals.

But is this really true?

Especially vitamin B

and calcium are thought to be consumed more when sugar consumption is high. In fact, vitamin B

is involved in the metabolism of sugar. As a coenzyme, it has a catalytic effect, i.e. it is not consumed in the process but is available again for energy metabolism after regeneration. It does not matter whether the sugar building blocks come from normal household sugar or from the carbohydrates in bread.

The rumor that sugar leads to decalcification of the bones is also untenable. Studies have shown that the consumption of sugar does not lead to a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals. Nevertheless, an excessive intake of sugar-rich foods is not recommended. If too many sweets are on the menu, there may be no room left for healthy things.

Tips

  • Enjoy sweets and sugar in moderation. Especially sweets, which at the same time have a high fat content (eg chocolate) should be consumed only in small quantities.
  • Snack with pleasure, but only a small portion per day (eg, a bar of chocolate, a small pastry).
  • For the craving for sweets also offer the following foods: dried fruits (raisins, apple rings, banana chips, figs, etc.) and fresh sweet fruits (pineapple, papaya, mango, strawberries, grapes, tangerines).
  • Eat a healthy and varied diet with a high percentage of plant-based foods. So you get all the vital nutrients in sufficient quantities.
