Is vasculitis curable?
Vasculitis is often not curable. Due to the progress in the therapeutic options, vasculitis is now usually very well treatable. However, this often means that a quite aggressive immune therapy with cortisone and immunosuppressive drugs (reduce the function of the immune system) must be carried out. If the therapy works well and the vasculitis improves, the therapy can often be reduced in consultation with the treating physician, so that high doses often only have to be taken for a short time.
What is the life expectancy for vasculitis?
Life expectancy in vasculitis is not significantly reduced by the innovations in therapy (immunomodulators) than in a healthy person. Immunomodulative therapy reduces the function of the immune system and reduces inflammatory reactions. Early detection of the disease and an adapted therapy is important.
With early detection and promptly initiated therapy, even serious consequential damage can be reduced. It is also important to lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes sufficient exercise, a healthy diet and abstaining from nicotine.
