Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx).

- What is the general health of your relatives?
Social history
- What is your profession?
- Are they exposed to harmful agents in your profession?
- Do you put excessive strain on your voice?
- Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?
Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- Are you hoarse? If so, for how long?
- Do you have any other symptoms of a cold such as cough, aches or fever?
- Have you noticed any change in your voice?
- Do you have a globus sensation (lumpy feeling)?
Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.
- Do you like to drink coffee, black or green tea? If so, how many cups per day?
- Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
- Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
- Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
Self history incl. medication history.
- Pre-existing conditions (infections, reflux disease (heartburn), immunodeficiency, allergies).
