Localization of ingrown hair

Only hairy body surfaces are affected, preferably on areas that are shaved. In men, the face and neck are the most common localization. In women, the armpits, legs and the intimate and anal regions are particularly affected.

Ingrown hairs on the neck occur particularly frequently in the beard region in men. This is partly due to the fact that beard hairs in most cases have a stronger consistency than the hair on the head. In addition, the skin in the beard region is very firm and thus in some cases hinders the penetration of beard hairs through the skin.

Especially very hairy people who have curly hair are more susceptible to ingrown hair. To remove ingrown hair, the methods already described can be used. A sharp, clean razor should also be used.

An antibacterial aftershave can also be helpful to prevent inflammation and ingrown hair. Ingrown hairs often occur in the bikini line. This is because the skin in the genital area is very sensitive to shaving, waxing or depilation.

To avoid ingrown hairs, you should make sure that you use a sharp and clean razor when shaving. In addition, a shaving cream should be used to soften the hair and make shaving easier. Afterwards you should avoid strong rubbing after shaving, especially by rough materials (e.g. denim). This can provoke the ingrowth of the hair enormously. In the worst case bacteria penetrate the hair roots during or after shaving and cause inflammation.

How is ingrown hair diagnosed?

The diagnosis is often made by those affected themselves, for example by detecting pustules on hairy parts of the body. Also the medical examination often only consists of a thorough examination of this affected region.Other examinations are often not necessary. In the case of an abscess on the anal region, i.e. an advanced inflammation that has already formed a lump, one can inject paint into the lump under local anesthesia and see if it emerges elsewhere. In this way, one wants to rule out that an inflammatory duct has formed under the skin, a so-called fistula.
