Lodoxamide is commercially available in the form of eye drops (Alomide). The drug is not registered in many countries.
Structure and properties
Lodoxamide (C11H6ClN3O6, Mr = 311.6 g/mol) is present in the drug as lodoxamide trometamol, a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water. See also under trometamol.
Effects
Lodoxamide (ATC S01GX05) has mast cell stabilizing and antiallergic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine from mast cells. Lodoxamide is not a direct antagonist at histamine H1 receptors.
Indications
For the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis vernalis, gigantopapillary conjunctivitis, and atopic conjunctivitis).
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Drops are placed in the eyes four times daily. See also under Administering eye drops. It is critical for treatment success to administer the drops regularly and not just when needed.
Contraindications
Lodoxamide is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Interactions
No drug-drug interactions have been reported to date.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions to the eye such as transient eye burning, stinging, or discomfort after use.
