There are various active ingredients or groups of medicines that can be used to treat dizziness. These are generally referred to in medical terminology as antivertiginosa. These include antihistamines, anticholinergics, benzodiazepines and calcium channel blockers.

  • The antihistamines are used in particular for so-called travel sickness and also for diseases of the inner ear such as Menieré’s disease. Dimenhydrinate and betahistine are two well-known agents for the treatment of dizziness with vomiting and nausea. The dimenhydrinate is available in pharmacies under the trade name Vomex® and is commonly used to treat dizziness caused by travel.

Vomex® can also be used in children, although it should of course be administered in lower doses than in adults. Possible and frequently described side effects of using histamine antagonists include increased drowsiness and a feeling of dizziness. Even if these medicines can be purchased without prescription, they should be taken in consultation with a doctor, especially in the case of existing underlying diseases, in order to avoid interactions with other medicines. Dimenhydrinate belongs to the large group of antihistamines, which are also used for allergic reactions and nausea. Dimenhydrinate or Vomex® is freely available in pharmacies and is particularly popular for treating motion sickness or seasickness. It has a soothing effect on dizziness as well as nausea and vomiting.

Vomex® is available in various forms of administration, including suppositories, dragees, syrups and tablets. It usually works for 3-6 hours and can be taken as needed. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient data on its effects on the unborn child.

Flunarizin ranks among the medicines, which take influence on the calcium channels. It is used in the treatment of migraine and works further quite well on the vertigo symptomatology with a vestibular origin – thus a vertigo whose cause lies in the equilibrium organ of the interior ear.

It is therefore more often prescribed for Menieré disease. It is a disease of the vestibular organ of balance characterized by tinnitus, severe sudden vertigo and hearing loss.Flunarizine is one of the prescription drugs. In particular, drowsiness and dizziness can occur at the beginning of the drug intake.
