Megaloblastic Anemia: Diagnostic Tests

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of abdominal organs) – to exclude renal/liver diseases, changes in the gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract).
  • Esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (ÖGD; reflection of esophagus, stomach and duodenum) with biopsy (tissue sampling) from the gastric mucosa – to exclude chronic type A gastritis* or bleeding.
  • Colonoscopy (colonoscopy) – to exclude bleeding from tumors of any kind.
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT)/pelvis (pelvic CT) – to exclude tumors/metastases.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen (abdominal MRI)/pelvis (pelvic MRI) – to exclude tumors/metastases.

* Annual EEGD check, due to increased risk of gastric cancer in chronic atrophic gastritis.
