Mexiletine is commercially available in the form of capsules. No drugs containing the active ingredient are currently registered in many countries.
Structure and properties
Mexiletine (C11H17NO, Mr = 179.3 g/mol) is present in drugs as mexiletine hydrochloride, a white, crystalline powder with a slightly bitter taste that is readily soluble in water. It is structurally related to lidocaine but can be administered perorally.
Effects
Mexiletine (ATC C01BB02) has antiarrhythmic and local anesthetic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of sodium channels.
Indications
For the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
