Milk Powder

Products

Powdered milk is available at specialty stores and grocery stores. It is found in numerous processed products (see below).

Structure and properties

Powdered milk is made from milk by extracting almost all of the water. This makes the milk more durable and does not require refrigerated storage. Furthermore, it acquires a smaller volume. Milk powder is easier to store and transport. Milk powder contains proteins, carbohydrates (lactose), fats, little residual water, calcium and other minerals and trace elements. Depending on the fat content, a distinction is made between whole milk powder and skim milk powder, among others. Skim milk powder contains significantly less fat than whole milk powder.

Areas of application

  • For the production of processed food, such as infant milk, confectionery, bakery products, bread, chocolate, ice cream, dairy products, yogurt, meat products, sauces and soups.
  • Milk can be reconstituted by adding drinking water. One speaks then of “dry milk”.
  • As animal feed.

Adverse effects

Powdered milk contains lactose and may cause gastrointestinal symptoms if you are lactose intolerant.
