Mouth Ulcer: Test and Diagnosis

Laboratory parameters of the 1st order – obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Small blood count
  • Differential blood count

Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, etc. – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Urine status (rapid test for: pH, leukocytes, nitrite, protein, glucose, blood), sediment [glucosuria/excretion of glucose through the urine?]
  • Vitamin B12 level
  • Folic acid level
  • Infectious serology – if syphilis (lues, venereal disease), HIV is suspected.
  • Celiac screening
  • Rheumatism diagnostics – CRP (C-reactive protein) or ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate); rheumatoid factor (RF), CCP-AK (cyclic citrulline peptide antibodies), ANA (antinuclear antibodies), HLA-B27 if necessary.
  • Skin smear/biopsy – in case of persistent ulcer (“persisting ulcer”) or unclear genesis (“origin”).
