Nasal Ointments

Products

Nasal ointments are on sale in many countries from various suppliers.

Structure and properties

Nasal ointments are semisolid preparations intended for application to the nasal mucosa. They consist of an ointment base such as wool grease, petrolatum, and macrogols. They may contain active pharmaceutical ingredients such as dexpanthenol, antibiotics (mupirocin), sea salt, Emser salt, or essential oils.

Effects

Nasal ointments generally have mucosal care, protective, soothing, anti-inflammatory, regenerative, and moisturizing properties. The spectrum of action depends on the ingredients. Nasal ointments can also be developed that release the active ingredients into the systemic circulation. We are not aware of any corresponding drug.

Indications

  • Dry or irritated nasal mucosa.
  • Inflammation of the nasal mucosa, incrustations.

The elongated tube attachment is inserted into the nostril and a short strand of nasal ointment is squeezed out. This is spread on the mucosa by gently pressing and massaging the nostrils. The ointment can also be applied with a clean finger.

Adverse effects

Precautions and adverse effects depend on the ingredients of the products.
