Nebilet® is a prescription drug from the group of so-called “beta-blockers”. This group is used to treat various diseases of the cardiovascular system, but especially high blood pressure and chronic cardiac insufficiency. The active ingredient contained in Nebilet® is called nebivolol. This is a beta-blocker of the 3rd generation, i.e. a relatively young group in terms of developmental history, with additional positive effects.
Mode of action
Nebilet® works by selectively blocking certain receptors of the body’s regulatory system, the beta1 receptors. These receptors are responsible, among other things, for increasing heart rate and performance, but they are also found in many other parts of the body, such as the kidneys, where blood pressure is also regulated. If these receptors are blocked by Nebilet® so that the signal sent by the body does not arrive, this leads to several effects: After an intake of about 1-2 weeks a first blood pressure lowering effect is noticeable, the full potential is reached after about 4 weeks.
- Heart rate reductionThe heart rate decreases and in addition the heart pumps less blood per beat into the vessels. As a result, it is less stressed and uses less energy, which is useful in the treatment of a weak heart or CHD, coronary heart disease. Nebilet® also has a positive effect on high blood pressure.
- Inhibition of the blood pressure-increasing effect of the kidneyThe long-term blood pressure-lowering effect of Nebilet® is, however, due to the fact that beta1 receptors in the kidney are blocked.
This is where an important blood pressure-increasing center is located. A blockage at this point thus leads to a long-term and effective lowering of blood pressure via a special mechanism.
- VasodilatationA certain reaction sequence leads to a release of the messenger substance nitric oxide (NO) into the blood, which causes the vessel to dilate. This again lowers the blood pressure.
