Structure and properties
Nonivamide (C17H27NO3, Mr = 293.4 g/mol) or pseudocapsaicin is an analog of capsaicin. It is also referred to as synthetic capsaicin.
Effects
Nonivamide (ATC M02AC) has hyperemicidal, skin irritant, and analgesic properties.
Indications
For the treatment of pain and inflammation, for example, in the setting of sports injuries, rheumatic conditions, muscle and joint pain, and osteoarthritis. Nonivamide is also found in defensive sprays (pepper sprays).
Dosage
According to the prescribing information. The drug is rubbed in a thin layer several times a day. Hands should be washed well after application. The drug should not get into the eyes and on mucous membranes.
Contraindications
Nonivamide is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Interactions with other drugs are not known.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as irritation, burning, redness, and hypersensitivity reactions.
